From Small Town Roots to Big Careers—and Finding Your Way Home

from Penny for your Shots

Some conversations feel like a catch-up over wine—and then turn into something deeper. This episode is one of those.I’m joined by Aimee Goeman, someone I knew of growing up in small-town Iowa but didn’t truly know until now. Our families crossed paths the way they do in rural communities—through church, farming, and familiar names—before life carried us in different directions. Years later, we sat down to talk about what sticks with you from where you’re from… and how you carry it forward.Aimee shares what it looks like to build a successful corporate career while still nurturing creativity, passion projects, and a deep connection to community. She now spends part of the year back in Belmond to be near family, reminding us that “coming home” doesn’t have to mean leaving anything behind. This is a light-hearted, thoughtful conversation about ambition, authenticity, and the quiet pull of belonging—especially in this season of life.In this episode, we talk about:How small-town roots shape who we becomeBuilding a big career without giving up creativity or connectionPassion projects as a form of joy, not pressureWhy community feels different in midlifeThe idea that you never fully leave your hometownLinks & Mentions from This EpisodeThe Ramsay Boutique (Belmond, Iowa): https://ramsayboutique.com/Midland (band): https://www.midlandofficial.com/Mark Wystrach (Lead Singer, Midland): https://www.instagram.com/markarooThe Steak Out (Sonoita, Arizona): https://www.azsteakout.com/our-storyIf you’ve ever felt pulled between where you came from and the life you’ve built, this conversation will feel like a familiar—and comforting—exhale. When’s the last time you did something just for YOU? 🍷✨Wine Camp 2026 is your chance to escape, sip fabulous local wines, cruise at sunset, laugh around the fire pit, and soak up the magic of New York’s Finger Lakes.📍 Dates: July 30–August 2, 2026🏡 Spots are limited, so grab yours now: https://www.pennyforyourshots.com/winecampBring your besties or come solo—you’ll leave with new favorites either way. This Impact Studios production is a collaboration with the Governor family, UTS Faculty of Law and Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research. The Last Outlaws teamKatherine Biber - UTS Law Professor and Chief InvestigatorAunty Loretta Parsley - Great-granddaughter of Jimmy Governor and the Governor Family Historian Leroy Parsons - Governor descendant, Narrator and Co-WriterKaitlyn Sawrey - Host, Writer and Senior ProducerFrank Lopez - Writer, Managing Next Generation Energy Systems Cambridge University Background Stakeholders working with energy systems have to make complex decisions formulated from risk-based assessments about the future. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
