From the Ashes: A Father and Daughter’s Hero’s Journey

from I Can Do This Show Me How!

Life isn’t life without its challenges. Some are minor, others are life-altering. American writer, Joseph Campell, would frame these challenges, particularly our most difficult ones, as a call to adventure - one of the twelve stages of what he termed ‘The Hero’s Journey’. When life as you know it drastically shifts, the process of overcoming the hurdles in front of you is one that you must navigate with a steady hand. One way of doing this is to study ‘storytelling frameworks’. That is, to draw on the experiences of others to help lead you to the finish line. In today's episode, I have two very special guests joining me to tell the story of a momentous challenge that they are still navigating their way through. In January of this year, California was ravaged by some of the deadliest fires the state had ever seen. Altadena residents, father and daughter, Mr. Michael Moore and Dr. Inez Moore, bore witness to this devastation firsthand when they lost their home in one of these fires. The story that they share is one of perseverance, strength, community, and one that embodies Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey in so many ways.   Tune in and listen to the twentieth episode to hear Mr. Michael and Dr. Inez Moore’s story of survival. In this episode, you will learn:What coping mechanisms my guests have used to deal with the tragedy of losing their home in the fire (5:34)One of the catalyst experiences my guests had that allowed them to start to heal (10:42)How relationships between my guests’ friends and neighbours have evolved since the fire (12:01)How my guests’ community are using support groups to vet those commissioned to rebuild their homes (16:46)How this experience has shaped my guests’ spiritual journey (18:03)Resources and strategies my guests used to deal with financial hurdles caused by the fire (26:33)ResourcesAltadena CollectiveThe Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph CampbellThe Power of Myth by Joseph Campbell and Bill MoyersFreedom’s Teacher by Katherine Mellen CharronLet's connect! My Email: [email protected] International: www.mentorfoundationusa.orgMentor: www.mentoring.orgAshoka Changemakers: www.ashoka.orgWomen’s World Banking Mentorship Program: www.womensworldbanking.orgService Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) www.score.orgBig Brothers Big Sisters: www.bbbs.orgCherie Blair Foundation for Women: www.cherieblairfoundation.orgToastmasters International Mentorship: www.toastmasters.org Hosted on Acast.
