Hi there, it's time for a new episode of News Bites! I'm Brody Halverson. And I'm Paz Bueno! All that and more, coming up next! ________________________________ 台灣農民使用無人機保護果樹 Taiwan's Farmers Use Drones to Protect Fruit Trees Do you like to eat lychee (荔枝) fruit? Lychee are delicious, and lots of them grow in Taiwan. These fruit grow on trees, and farmers grow these trees in orchards (果園). But people are not the only ones that like lychee fruit. Pests (害蟲) like it too! Pests are bugs that destroy the fruit. So how can Taiwan's farmers protect the fruit? In Changhua County (彰化縣), farmers have a new way to control pests this year. The farmers are using drones (無人機). How does it work? In April, the lychee trees start to flower. That's when the pests come. At that time, farmers sent drones all over their orchards. Everywhere they go, the drones release wasps. The wasps will control the pests. The wasps lay their eggs (產卵) in the pest eggs, so the pest eggs cannot become more pests. When there are less pests, the lychee trees can grow better. In the past, the farmers used pesticides (農藥) to control the pests. But pesticides can harm the environment (環境). That's why the farmers in Changhua County want to use wasps now. So, the farmers send out the drones, the drones release the wasps, the wasps control the pests, and the lychee trees can grow strong. This way, we will all have more delicious lychee fruit to eat. ________________________________ 烏克蘭難民姐妹花 傑出的音樂家 Ukrainian Sisters in England Turn Out to be Amazing Musicians Because of the war in Ukraine (俄烏戰爭), many Ukrainian families have had to leave their homes. They fled (逃難) to different countries. In England, people opened their homes to these refugees (難民) who needed a place to stay. One English family took in two Ukrainian sisters and their mother. The English family gave them two rooms with an old piano (鋼琴). But when the Ukrainian family arrived, something amazing happened. From the room where the sisters were staying, the most beautiful music could be heard. They would open the windows, and people on the street would stop and listen to this music. The piano music was being played by the older sister, Khrystyna, who is 17 years old. Khrystyna's younger sister Sasha is 12 years old, and she plays the violin (小提琴). Both girls have an incredible talent for music. Now, the two sisters have received scholarships (獲得獎學金) to study at the best music schools in England. Khrystyna and Sasha say their music has helped them face the trauma of leaving their home in Ukraine. The English family say they are lucky to have such wonderful musicians as guests (房客). ________________________________ 加拉巴哥群島 發現珊瑚礁 Scientists Discover Coral Reef in the Galapagos Have you ever seen a coral reef (珊瑚礁)? It is a special ecosystem (生態) that can be found in the ocean. The reef is a colorful home for many fish, plants and corals. Some people call reefs "The Rainforests of the Sea". Like a rainforest, a coral reef can support many kinds of life. But, coral reefs around the world are in danger. Climate change (氣候變化) is making the ocean warmer, which harms the reefs. That's not good. But recently, there is actually some good news (好消息). Scientists have found a new coral reef, and it is in excellent condition They found it in the Galapagos Islands (加拉巴哥群島), near South America. This new reef has given us hope. It is special for three reasons. One, this reef is very deep (深). It is 600 meters under water, much deeper than most coral reefs. Because it is deeper, climate change has not affected it as much. Two, it is still healthy. This reef has all kinds of life. There are many types of fish and sharks (鯊魚). There are also rays (鰩魚) and pink octopus (粉紅章魚). Three, the reef is in a protected area (保護區). It is part of the Galapagos Marine Protected Area. It's an area where nature is protected by the government. This healthy reef shows that when people protect the ocean, we can see great results ________________________________ So, in today's News Bites… Farmers in Changhua County are using drones to protect their fruit trees.
