Fuel Crisis Rolls On

The Government is being called on to reconvene the Dail early to ensure fuel supports remain in place.   The cuts to excise duty of 27 cent for a litre of petrol, and 32 cent on a litre of diesel, were introduced in the wake of widespread fuel protests in April.  Those excise reductions are set to be phased out on the 1st of September, however the Dail is in recess until the middle of next month.  But Kevin McPartlan from Fuels for Ireland, says TDs need to return to Leinster House before the end of August. Meanwhile, Labour wants the Government to bring back targeted energy credits in Budget 2027.  It doesn't believe reported plans to raise the higher threshold of income tax by at least 2,000 euro would go far enough for workers.  The point at which they would hit the higher rate could go up to 46 thousand euro in the next Budget.  Labour's Finance Spokesperson Ged Nash says the Government should have given a break to workers last year instead of hospitality.
