Classified as their own distinct biological family through genetic sequencing rather than belonging to the weasel family (Mustelidae), these nocturnal omnivores provide essential pest control by feeding on lawn grubs, crop pests, and stinging insects. Their unique physiological resilience also makes them notable predators, possessing natural immunity to the hemotoxic venom of pit vipers like copperheads and rattlesnakes. A skunk's signature defense relies on volatile sulfur-containing compounds called thiols and thioacetates, which can be detected by the human olfactory system in tiny concentrations. Skunks conserve this finite spray through a variety of escalating warning behaviors, including foot stamping, bluff charges, and acrobatic handstands because replenishing depleted anal glands requires significant metabolic energy over several days.
