The Alhambra in Granada, Spain, stands as a masterclass of Islamic architecture and medieval engineering. The name Alhambra is derived from the Arabic Al-Qal'a Al-Hamra, meaning "The Red Castle," the structure gets its name from the red clay bricks used in its fortifications, though evidence suggests it was once whitewashed to gleam in the sunlight. Inside, the design features muqarnas, a form of ornamental vaulting that resembles honeycombs or stalactites, expertly used to break up the structure of domes and reflect light. The builders also mastered hydraulic engineering, diverting the Darro River to create a gravity-fed water system.
