Fun Facts About the Blarney Stone

from Fun Facts Daily · host Kyle Wood

The Blarney Stone is a block of limestone built into the battlements of Blarney Castle in County Cork, Ireland, famous for the legend that kissing it bestows the "gift of the gab," or smooth eloquence. The term "blarney" originated in the 16th century during exchanges between Queen Elizabeth I and the Lord of Blarney, Cormac Teige McCarthy, whose endless flattering letters and evasive excuses led the Queen to dismiss his promises as meaningless flattery. First documented in Francis Grose’s 1785 Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, the ritual of kissing the stone attracts over 400,000 visitors annually including historic figures such as Winston Churchill. To kiss the underside of the stone, visitors lie on their backs 85 feet above the ground and lean backwards through the parapet machicolations using iron handrails. Blarney Castle and its surrounding 60-acre estate, featuring historic poison and fern gardens alongside the 19th-century Scottish Baronial Blarney House, remain a private family residence managed by the Colthurst family. While long-standing folklore claimed the rock was a fragment of the Scottish Stone of Scone gifted by Robert the Bruce following the Battle of Bannockburn, geological analysis conducted by the University of Glasgow in 2014 disproved this origin. Microscopic testing confirmed the stone contains ancient fossilized brachiopods and bryozoans native to local 330-million-year-old Irish limestone deposits, verifying that the stone was quarried locally rather than imported from Scotland. Listen Ad-Free on Patreon. For just $3 per month, you can get ad-free versions of Fun Facts Daily, Who ARTed and Art Smart.
