When considered collectively, the structural integrity of a full head of hair is theoretically strong enough to support up to twelve tons. Growth occurs at a rate of approximately half an inch per month, making hair the second fastest-growing tissue in the human body, trailing only bone marrow. Beyond its structural properties, hair acts as a permanent chemical diary of an individual's diet, environment, and mineral intake. Because the hair shaft is composed of dead tissue once it emerges from the scalp, it preserves chemical signatures that allow forensic scientists and archaeologists to reconstruct the life histories of modern subjects and ancient mummies alike. Interestingly, humans possess nearly the same density of hair follicles as chimpanzees, though most human follicles produce fine, nearly invisible vellus hair rather than thick terminal hair.
