Okay, I'm a boomer and I'm going to talk about the music of my generation, but I'm not going to say, trust me, trust me, trust me. I'm not going to say how much better our music was or is than the music that's out there now because the truth of the matter is, is that there's people like Childish Gambino, Donald Glover's, this is America, her, the song, I can't breathe, Olivia Rodrigo, did I pronounce that name right? Rodrigo. It talks about, you know, women's reproductive rights and mental health awareness.
There's really cool music out there floating around today, but I am going to talk about the Beach Boys. That's what I'm doing tonight in just a little while, as a matter of fact. I'm going to the Capitol Theatre in Clearwater, Florida, where I will see Al Jardine. And who, you say, is Al Jardine?
I could tell you my Al Jardine story, but I'm not going to. I will just tell you that he is one of the founding members of the Beach Boys. He was there in the beginning of 1961 with him and Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love, you know, David Marks, several, several people that created surf music, you know, just absolutely marvelous, marvelous music. He was, you know, before rock, before surf rock, Jardine, he loved folk music.
He pushed the Beach Boys to come out with Sloop John B. If you ever heard that song, it's not your surf music type thing. It is not when I heard that. I heard Sloop John B when I was in junior high school, and I said, holy cow, this is absolutely incredible.
But then he also did the fun songs like Help Me, Ronda, and yeah, he was just, yeah, good. He was, you know, he performed very well on the Pet Sounds album, which was one of the coolest damn albums that ever came out in my lifetime, truly one of the coolest albums. Al Jardine is now 83 years old, and I've been listening to him with the Beach Boys forever. Now, the Beach Boys kind of fell apart.
Mike Love took control of the name. I now call it the Beach Boys touring band with Mike Love, and then it's just a bunch of studio musicians and an occasional worn out TV star that they go on. But Al Jardine was there right in the beginning, and like I said, 83 years old now, all of the remaining Beach Boys are in their 80s. Several, all of the Wilson's are now gone.
They've all passed away, and Mike Love is very old, and he's still hanging in there. He's having a very difficult time with his voice, and what's happening right now is people from my generation are just taking the time now to see for the last time the people that we grew up with. I've seen Paul McCartney three times. Loved every show.
I've seen Bob Dylan. He had a very intimate evening with Bob Dylan at the Bellevue Built More Hotel, where he did a television special years and years ago that never aired. You can find it on YouTube. Dylan Byaz was there a bunch of people, and it was done in the ballroom in a very close, small, actually small room, but we were like right up front.
Seen the Rolling Stones. I, you know, I was all kinds of, but Al Jardine went from surf music to social change. They did songs with the Beach Boys about civil rights, Vietnam, all kinds of things, where Mike Love was more on a conservative end, the rest of the Beach Boys were not so much. We are against war.
We are against all of them. But I'm so looking forward to seeing this show tonight. As soon as the tickets, as soon as I saw that the tickets became available, I immediately bought one and it's going to happen at the Capitol Theater in Clearwater, which is a very small theater. I don't think it has more than 200 seats if that, have no idea.
It used to be a movie theater. It's where I saw Jaws. If you look up, you can go on the internet and look at Jaws debut in Clearwater, Florida, and you'll see a picture of the Capitol Theater with a line going out. If you look real close, you'll see me in that line, a much younger version.
That was in 1975, but, you know, it's going to be cool. It's not going to be nostalgia. It's going to be legacy. And I am so looking forward to that, as I sit here and burp.
Hmm. I got a lot to do before I go. I have to decide what pair of shorts I'm going to wear and what flowery shirt that I have. That would be appropriate for tonight.
