Funan

In this episode, we explore Funan, the ancient maritime network of states that flourished across mainland Southeast Asia from the 1st to the 7th century CE, spanning parts of present-day Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand. Drawing on Chinese historical records and archaeological discoveries from sites like Óc Eo, we examine how Funan grew through long-distance trade, advanced irrigation, and cultural connections with India. We also look at ongoing debates over the identity of the Funanese people, their role as a precursor to the Khmer Empire, and the forces that led to Funan’s decline and absorption into the rising Chenla polity.
