Functional Anatomy 101: How Vision Really Works

from The Berne Podcast with Dr. Sam Berne

In this episode, I’m sharing part of a lecture from our practitioner training program on functional anatomy of the eye. Most of what we learn about the eye is structural — naming parts, memorizing terms — but that’s static. Vision is dynamic. It adapts to environmental demands, and it’s deeply integrated with the brain, the vestibular system, and the whole body. We walk through the eye from the outside in — eyelids, sclera, cornea, iris, pupil, lens, retina, optic nerve, and the eye muscles — but through a functional lens instead of a purely structural one. Along the way I get into: * Why sclerology (reading the white part of the eye) can reveal liver, gallbladder, and metabolic imbalances * What pupil dilation patterns tell us about nervous system stress * How color and light therapy can “wake up” a retina that’s shut down from stress or toxicity * Strabismus Syndrome — when a child’s eyes tunnel with no medical explanation * Why eye muscle surgery for strabismus often fails, and what vision therapy offers instead * The case for short-interval eye patching over long-term patching * The powerful idea that changing function can change structure — even reversing conditions like cataracts This is an excerpt from our practitioner training program, so if you’re a parent, OT, or practitioner working with vision, tracking, or learning differences, there’s a lot here to take in.
