Functional Dysautonomia - How neurological imbalance can impact gut function and more!

from A Functional Approach with Dr. Jim Chialtas · host Jim Chialtas, DACM, L.Ac.

In this 75th episode I discuss a neurological imbalance referred to as functional dysautonomia. It is a fancy word meaning an imbalance of the sympathetic (fight or flight) & parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous system functions. I will of course explain what exactly is going on, some differences between a more chronic dysautonomia mechanism vs. a stress response, what brain regions are involved, how a condition like this might manifest symptomatically, how it could be related to Covid-19, and some tips on how to improve the condition. I also share a story about when my dog Cheddar and I were stalked by two coyotes in a local canyon. And lastly... Near the end of the episode I had a brain-skip and couldn't restate the definition of the neurological condition called POTS on the fly. The definition is: Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). It is a condition where changes in posture, for example from sitting to standing, leads to dramatic increases in heart rate and often times a loss of blood pressure.
