Future Shock - In deze dozen stopt Nederland het internet

Datacenters. Je ziet ze vaak niet, omdat je niet weet wat het zijn. Op steeds meer plekken in Nederland verrijzen blokkendozen waarin talrijke computers en servers dag en nacht staan te zoemen en te brommen. Om al ons internetverkeer in goede banen te leiden en vooral onze data in op te slaan. Het zijn veelal grote techbedrijven als Microsoft, Amazon en Google die gebruikmaken van de Nederlandse datahub, want dat zijn we in Europa bij uitstek. Maar eigenlijk weten we niet echt wat daarbinnen gebeurt en wat we er aan hebben op ons grondgebied. Nog los van de (groene) stroom die de datacenters draaiende moet houden. Om ons bewust te maken van de praktijken en ons online gedrag heeft onderzoeksinstituut Waag een data-wandeling uitgezet rond zo’n datacenter, op vier plekken in het land. Redacteur Tom Reijner liep er één, samen met Sander van der Waal van Waag. Wat kunnen we doen om deze ontwikkeling te keren?
