G.F. Phillips Remembered

from listenupnorth

Featuring the work of the late North East writer G.F. Phillips, a writer I first met and recorded through Keith Armstrong and Northern Voices Community projects. This collection of Gordon's work was taken from recordings made for listenupnorth 2010-2013. I knew him as a gentle and perceptive man, drawing on astute and sensitive observations for his writing. Through his work we often felt the raw plight of others, with other pieces, a mischievous dry humour and irony. Gordon leaves us a legacy of fantastic written work and through listenupnorthhe leaves his voice. Podcast content: G.F. Phillips talks about his writing Fresh Contours - a poem inspired by the Northumberlandia land sculpture near Cramlington From the Testimony of an Otherwise Citizen - a poem on the plight of Burmese refugees Quarantine Song - a folk song lyric about Russian Troops held on St Mary's Island with cholera Johnny Spry - a poem about the goalkeeper for Footloose Wanders Home Tomorrow - a story of displacement at the hands of mob culture Suffolk Street Bomb - a poem inspired by a 1000lb bomb found in hendon, Sunderland
