G X R EP 3: Decarbonising the built environment

from Greenfluence · host Greenfluence Team

In episode 3, Pavina and Shri sit down with Dr Martin Zhu to learn about i2Cool. Hop on to this week’s pod and learn all about: In Hong Kong, buildings consume over 90% of total electricity, and about 60% of the building energy consumption comes from AC. More specially, HK buildings have a high window-wall ratio, so more than 50% of the heat loss and gain is through windows. i2Cool is an environment-friendly passive radiative cooling paint which is patented in Hong Kong. The paint features the edge in solar reflection and thermal emission, resulting in its significant sub-ambient cooling effect, without consuming electricity and ozone-depleting refrigerants. By applying the cooling paint, the roof surface and the indoor air temperature leading to the 8-10% cooling energy saving potential. Learn about the growing start-up space in Hong Kong and how governments and universities are providing more and more opportunities for PHD students to develop their own start-up. i2Cool was the first project Incubated by HK Tech 300 program which helped Dr Martin with funding to commercialise the cooling technology. Dr Martin’s PhD supervisor & i2Cool presidential scientist, Dr. Edwin Chi Yan TSO was listed in the World’s Top 2% Scientists 2022 published by Stanford University. Inspired by the Sahara desert ant that has silver hairs that reflects visible and near-infrared light, including sunlight in the Saharan desert. The paint is going back to its roots to the desert as 2 months ago Dr Martin announced that i2Cool is the Winner at Global Proptech Challenge and a project with Emaar in Dubai will be launched soon.  Special thanks to our amazing team!
