Gab & Jam Ep 164 Should I Copy Someone’s Style? Podcast

from Gab and Jam · host Prejippie Music Group, Inc.

Ep 164 Should I copy someone’s style? Video Description You’ve heard the saying that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”? Well, that probably works when you’re making pizza, but musical artists—and, dare we say, creators in general—want to be known for having your OWN individual style. So, why would you EVER copy someone ELSE’s style? It’s actually an age old question—whether to fit in or stand out. Reasons why you might copy someone’s style: 1. It’s the first step to finding your own style. [“When you’re copying someone’s style, what you get WRONG is the YOU coming through.” (Paraphrased) -Art Juice 🧃 podcast (ep 92) (add link)] 2. When you want to add a twist on a style that you are ready to spice up. 3. To simply use as a practice tool. Here is the TRUE key to knowing if you’ve overstepped the line: 1. According to Inspiration or Imitation? [92‪]‬ https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/inspiration-or-imitation-92/id1451530001?i=1000494552430 ‬ If you are trying to sell your copy as your original work, you know you are being sketchy or if you generally do not feel proud of this work. So, yes, imitation has its place in creating your own art/music, etc. It can be a tool that can add zest to what you do. Too much of it, however, doesn’t serve to make you stand out as your own creative being. What do you think? Is it EVER useful to copy other folks’ style? Let us know in the comments below.
