Galatians 1:1-9 Clarity is Kindness

from RUF at UNCW · host Reformed University Fellowship at UNCW

In this introductory passage from Galatians, we see Paul reaching out to his friends with both clarity and vulnerability. In this week's large group message, we are reminded that the Gospel is good news, not good advice-- and this seemingly small distinction makes all the difference in the world.  “For there is no middle ground between Christian righteousness and works- righteousness. There is no other alternative to Christian righteousness but works- righteousness; if you do not build your confidence on the work of Christ you must build your confidence on your own work.” --Martin Luther "Many . . .  churches functionally teach the idea that we are saved because of (the level of) our faith. But the gospel says that we are saved through our faith. The first approach really makes our performance the savior, and the second makes Christ’s performance the Savior." - Tim Keller DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. From this passage, how would you describe Paul’s tone? 2. What are some counterfeit “gospels” (promises of good news) you hear around you on a regular basis? 3. What are the key elements of the gospel from v. 3-5? Who is the “main character/hero” in the gospel story? 4. How do people “add to the gospel” today in ways that diminish its power? Have you seen this personally? If so, what effect did it have on you? 5. What is Paul’s attitude toward those who distort the gospel (vv.8-9)? How can we ensure that the message we’ve believed is “true?
