Galatians (Part 5 of 7) – Gal. 4:8-31

from The Biblical Roots Podcast

Send us Fan MailIn part 5 of our exploration of this amazing book, we work our way through the last two sections of chapter 4; Paul's pastoral concern for the churches in Galatia, and his provocative allegory involving Abraham, Sarah, and their servant Hagar. UPDATE: As I continue to pour over the book of Galatians, I have discovered a level of nuance that I missed in this video. I said the two covenants Paul was comparing in his allegory were the Mosaic Covenant and the New Covenant. However, I don’t know if that was completely accurate. In the text, Paul does not directly indicate which covenant Sarah represents. But on further study, it seems more probable that Paul was directly comparing the Mosaic Covenant with the Abrahamic Covenant. And, of course, the Abrahamic Covenant was the “mother” (so to speak) of the New Covenant in that it was God’s promise for the whole world, which was ultimately fulfilled by Christ and now spreads through the Gospel. And, in the end, that is the connection Paul makes in this passage. So I still believe my conclusions in this video are accurate. But in the interest of full disclosure, I wanted to bring this issue to your attention. Shalom, RobIn this series, we’re approaching the book of Galatians with an eye for the theological themes that speak to the relationship between the Christian and the Law of Moses. Do any of the Old Testament laws apply to us? If so, in what way? What about the Ten Commandments? Has that changed under the New Covenant? What is Paul talking about in Galatians 6 when he shows us how to fulfill what he calls the “Law of Christ"?
