Galaxy Council in Shock as Humans Reject All Talks

from Short SciFi Stories on the go · host Kelli Korner

The holographic words glowed in the center of the Galactic Council's circular chamber, where representatives from 47 different species shifted uncomfortably in their custom design seats, the message was short, direct, and shocking, negotiation declined. After all, humans were still relatively new to the stars, only 200 years into faster than light travel, they needed to be reminded of their place, but the humans didn't answer, not at first, then, things began to happen. The humans are building weapons platforms, hundreds of them, in deep space, using technologies we've never even seen before, impossible, spat-counselor-counm, they don't have the resources, or the knowledge, they've been studying us, Xyloth said quietly, every treaty, every conflict, every weakness in our systems. They, they fought among themselves for thousands of years, nuclear weapons, biological warfare, weapons that could wipe out entire planets, they had the power to destroy their species many times over, and yet they survived, vex said quietly. The certainty that if one side attacked, both would be destroyed, vex closed his eyes slowly, we've made a terrible mistake, we believe their peaceful behavior was weakness, we didn't realize it was a choice a choice maintained only through constant discipline, unlike us, they didn't evolve beyond violence, they learned to master it, and now, we've reminded them why those controls were created in the first place.
