In the penultimate episode of Season 1, Ned Stark is brought in chains to the Great Sept of Baelor and offered a final exit: confess to treason, swear fealty to Joffrey, and live out his days at the Wall. He takes the deal — and Joffrey executes him anyway. Running alongside Ned's end: Robb springs a successful trap in the Riverlands, capturing Jaime Lannister at the Battle of Whispering Wood while sacrificing two thousand men as bait; Jon Snow receives Longclaw from Commander Mormont and chooses the Night's Watch over his family after Maester Aemon reveals his Targaryen identity; and Daenerys, refusing to flee as Drogo's wound turns fatal, allows Mirri Maz Duur to perform a blood magic ritual whose full cost remains unknown.This episode resets the foundational premise of the series: that moral clarity and lawful conduct are sufficient protection. Ned's confession — made to save his daughter, not himself — changes nothing.
