Game of Thrones S02E09 — Blackwater

Stannis Baratheon's fleet enters Blackwater Bay and meets Tyrion's trap: a single wildfire ship ignited by a flaming arrow that turns the harbor into an inferno. Stannis survives and personally leads the assault on the Mud Gate, but King's Landing's defense collapses from within — Joffrey abandons the walls at Cersei's order, the Gold Cloaks crumble, and Sandor Clegane, broken by the sight of burning men, publicly walks away from the Kingsguard. Tyrion rallies the remaining defenders and leads a flanking charge through the city's tunnels, only to be cut across the face mid-battle by Ser Mandon Moore — one of Joffrey's own Kingsguard — before his squire Podrick Payne kills the attacker. Tywin Lannister's cavalry, arriving with Loras Tyrell riding in Renly's armor, routes Stannis's forces and saves the city. Cersei, moments from poisoning herself and Tommen rather than surrendering, is interrupted by Tywin's entrance into the throne room.The episode sets Tyrion's competence directly against Joffrey's cowardice — the man who saved the city wakes up unconscious in the field while Tywin claims the victory. Stannis's personal courage on the walls reframes him as a serious threat even in defeat, and the unanswered question of who ordered Mandon Moore to kill Tyrion casts a shadow over everything that follows.
