This project endeavors to serve two kinds of listeners at the same time: those who like history and those who like Game of Thrones. The two are often mutual interests. In effect this audiobook is a real-life historical breakdown of the cultures, characters, and events contained within George R. R. Martin's epic book series A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF). The books and short stories, along with the global smash hit HBO TV series Game of Thrones, which is based upon the ASOIAF novels, is set in a complex, engrossing medieval fantasy world every bit as interesting, complicated, morally gray, and brutal as humanity's real history. The reason for Mr. Martin's level of detail in crafting his characters, locations, cultures, and histories within the ASOIAF world is rather simple. George R. R. Martin is a lifelong student of history as well as an unashamed history nerd. In interview after interview, the author of this truly expansive world admits to drawing upon real events, real cultures, and actual peoples within world history as templates for his imagination to build upon. Mr. Martin seems to have a particular affinity for the medieval period (5th to 15th centuries CE) of Europe and the Middle East, with a great deal of inspiration coming from British history during that era. In addition he draws heavy influence from the Renaissance era (15th to 17th centuries CE). He is also not afraid to dive further back into human history for literary fuel. The ancient Celts, Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, and Persians, among others, are all present in some form within the ASOIAF world. Nearly every culture on earth, along with a bit of its history, has a place in ASOIAF. Contact: [email protected]
