Gamin Kang

In this episode, I chat with Professor Gamin, who is a Korean-born multi-instrumentalist. She is renowned for her expertise in traditional Korean wind instruments, including the piri, taepyongso (te-yeong-so), and saenghwang. Professor Gamin is also the official holder of South Korea’s Important Intangible Cultural Asset No. 46, and holds a doctorate in Korean traditional music from Seoul National University. From 2000 to 2010, she served as the principal piri player for the National Gugak Orchestra in Seoul. Since relocating to the United States, Professor Gamin has received several prestigious grants and fellowships and has collaborated in cross-cultural improvisations with acclaimed musicians. She has performed at prominent venues such as Roulette Theater, The New School, and the Metropolitan Museum. In 2018, she performed with Yo-Yo Ma at the Silkroad concert in Seoul. Her album Nong was released by Innova Records, and in 2020, she was selected as an Artist-in-Residence at the HERE Arts Center in New York City. Gamin’s work continues to bridge traditional Korean music with global contemporary forms, making her a vital figure in cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural performance.
