Gangs of New York

from ADHD-DVD

Marty Month rolls on, as we move backwards in Scorsese's filmography to his first film with Leo, a revenge picture set in the mean streets of New York circa 1862. It's 2002's Gangs of New York, directed by Martin Scorsese, written by Jay Cocks, and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, Cameron Diaz, Jim Broadbent, John C. Reilly, Liam Neeson, Brendan Gleeson, Henry Thomas, Stephen Graham and Eddie Marsan. It finds the director very much in an era where he seems to be gunning for the awards that have previously eluded him throughout his career, and to that end the movie is nominated for ten Oscars in 2003. Shockingly, it wins zero -- a shame, as the co-host writing this copy liked it quite a bit. This one comes from Hayley's collection, a Giant Tiger pick-up she's been sitting on for more than a decade. Other works discussed in this episode include The Lost Boys, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part II, Paddington, Wonka, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Harry Potter movies, Jim Broadbent's 2001-02 run, drive-in theaters, Fleabag, Super Mario Wonder, Luigi's Mansion, and the Harbour Centre Food Court. If you'd like to watch the movie, Gangs of New York is readily available on streaming in Canada, on Netflix, Starz and Amazon Prime at the time of publication. We'll be back next Friday as Marty Month goes into overtime -- suitably -- as we consider a rare Scorsese comedy for entry into the pod canon: 1985's After Hours, starring Griffin Dunne and Rosanna Arquette. It is sadly not streaming anywhere in Canada currently, but can be rented on YouTube. Good luck finding it, and we'll see you at the movies!
