El Parque Nacional de Garajonay se extiende por una superficie que supera el 10 % de la isla de La Gomera. Fue declarado como tal en 1981. Posteriormente, en 1986, la Unesco lo incluyó entre los bienes que forman parte del Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Su superficie es de 3.948 hectáreas, y su territorio se extiende por todos los municipios de La Gomera, ocupando el centro y ciertas zonas del norte de la isla. El terreno del parque, a menu­do envuelto en una húmeda niebla, está constituido por materiales basálticos, debidos a coladas y piroclastos, con diversos roques y fortalezas. En su interior se encuentra el Monumento de la esencia de la flor. El parque toma su nombre del alto de Garajonay, la mayor altura de la isla con 1.487 metros. La cota mínima del parque es de 650 m, el caserío del Cedro. Su declaración obedece a que alberga la mejor muestra conocida en el Viejo Mundo de laurisilva, un bosque húmedo de variadas especies de hoja perenne que en el Terciario cubría prácticamente toda Europa. La laurisilva se da en un régimen climático unifor­me en el que la variación anual de la temperatura es pequeña y la precipitación es relativamen­te abundante, con humedad casi constante debida al mar de nubes.
