Garden City: Sabbath + Rest
from West Towne Weekly Hosted by West Towne Christian Church
God built a rhythm of rest into creation from the very beginning, and it was never meant to be something we crash into out of exhaustion. The Hebrew word Shabbat means to stop or cease, but Sabbath is more than just pausing. It is an active practice of delight, joy, and worship. When God created humanity, the very first full day of human existence was a day of rest, meaning we were designed to work from our rest, not rest from our work. After generations of slavery in Egypt, God gave His people the Sabbath as a commandment not to burden them, but to remind them that their worth was never tied to their productivity. Jesus affirmed this when He said the Sabbath was made for people, not people for the Sabbath. Practicing Sabbath today means intentionally stopping, resting, delighting in God's gifts, and turning our hearts toward worship. It is a weekly reminder that we are loved children of God whose identity was settled long before we ever accomplished anything.
