Garvaghy Parades Stir Deep Wounds | Belfast News

Tensions are soaring as the Orange Order plans a march through Portadown’s Garvaghy Road — a move that resurrects one of Northern Ireland’s most painful chapters. Thirty years after the Drumcree standoff, which ended in the deaths of three Catholic children and widespread trauma, residents fear history is repeating itself. A recent court ruling overruled last year’s parade decision, forcing the Orange Order to reapply — and this time, with heightened anxiety. Many locals, especially mothers and youth, are terrified to speak out, recalling barricaded streets, violence, and the suffocating fear of living in a “ghetto.” Community leaders warn that if the parade proceeds, it could undo decades of peace — leaving families traumatized once more.
