Episode Description
In this episode, I'm joined by Gary Stefan, a true Streatham Redskins and Slough Jets legend whose hockey story began in Brantford, Ontario, growing up alongside Wayne Gretzky — playing together for the Brantford Nadrofsky Steelers and even sharing a backyard rink.
After finishing college in 1980, Gary travelled to the UK to work in his aunt's sports shop in Knightsbridge. Interest from both Richmond Flyers and Streatham followed, with Gary initially choosing Richmond before moving on to the Streatham Redskins — a decision that changed everything. Intended as a one-year stay, it became five prolific seasons, during which Gary scored an incredible 436 goals and became a central figure in one of the club's strongest eras.
Gary later took on a leadership role with the newly formed Slough Jets, serving as ice hockey co-ordinator for 13 seasons and guiding the club to sustained success, including League titles, Cups and the BNL Championship.
He retired after the 1998–99 season and was inducted into the British Hockey Hall of Fame in 2000, recognising a remarkable contribution to UK ice hockey.
