Gbagbo to remain in the Hague pending his trial

The Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Court has ordered a review of a lower chamber's decision to remand former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo to continued detention in the Hague, pending the conclusion of his trial. The appeals judges, in a unanimous decision, found that the lower chamber had erred on a number of issues, most notably considering as a punitive factor Gbagbo's denial of responsibility for the crimes he's accused of. The former Ivorian leaders has been in detention at The Hague since November 2011 where he has pleaded not guilty to four crimes against humanity charges, including murder and rape in the aftermath of a disputed election in 2010.
