GBW #52: Coming to You Live... For Now (Pontypool / Spree / WNUF Halloween Special)

Hello, and welcome to another episode of The Good, The Bad, and The What!? The show in which we discuss three films that we have deemed "good," "bad," or "what!?" within a subgenre, theme, motif, director or actor's filmography, and more! This week, Chris and Ryan dive into the niche world of Broadcast Terrors; a sub-subgenre of horror in which horrific events are being broadcast in real-time over the airwaves, the Internet, or your television. We start with "Pontypool," a 2008 zombie movie gem in which a small Canadian AM radio station slowly discovers the terror happening outside their studio. While we both agree that the final leg of the film is a bit rough, the first 2/3rds brim with tension, suspense, and solid filmmaking. Then, we move onto 2020's "Spree," a film that has an interesting hook (think "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer" but wanting to become a viral sensation) but suffers from an imbalance of tone, despite strong commitment from the cast. Finally, we move onto the delightful and delightfully niche "WNUF Halloween Special" from 2013, though if you didn't know that's when the film was made, you might suspect it was made in 1987 when the film is set, it's that committed to its bit as a small cable affiliate airing a Halloween special with spot-on faux commercials in between segments.  You can find this and future episodes on our website thegoodbadwhat.com.
