GBW #59: I Gave You All the Clues (Gone Girl / The Da Vinci Code / The Snowman)

Hello, and welcome to another episode of The Good, The Bad, and The What!? The show in which we discuss three films that we have deemed "good," "bad," or "what!?" within a subgenre, theme, motif, director or actor's filmography, and more! This week, Ryan and Chris dive into adaptations of airport novels; page-turners that sit at an endcap at a Hudson News that get propelled into The New York Times' Bestseller list and inevitably get bought up by a studio. We start with David Fincher's 2014 adaptation of Gillian Flynn's "Gone Girl," where the screenplay was adapted by Flynn herself. By actually adapting the book for the filmic medium, Fincher's film maintains the intrigue of the central mystery while becoming a media circus satire that stands on its own. Then, we move into the faithful-but-uneventful 2006 adaptation of "The Da Vinci Code." Ron Howard directing Dan Brown's immensely popular book certainly got the box office numbers, but not the critical acclaim, and we have to agree with them on that. Finally, we discuss the everything-that-could-go-wrong-did misshapen mess that is 2017's "The Snowman." Tomas Alfredson ("Let the Right One In," "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy") adapts Jo Nesbø's grimdark novel... except they didn't shoot nearly 15% of it, and you can tell.  You can find this and future episodes on our website thegoodbadwhat.com.
