Helen speaks with Kate McMaster, owner operator of the iconic road stop Gemtree on the Plenty Highway. Located 140km North-East of Alice Springs, Gemtree is a welcome port of call for young and old travelling the Outback Way. With accommodation options ranging from camping and caravanning to cabins, you can enjoy an extensive range of activities and attractions including fossicking and Kate's Campoven Kitchen. In this episode, Kate shares a little of her family's 5-generation history on the property, which she now runs with her husband Aaron. Kate and Helen also discuss the semi-precious stones that can be found and what you can expect from a trip on one of the daily fossicking tours. There are many activities on offer at Gemtree, including a swimming pool and karaoke, but for a taste of genuine outback hospitality she recommends Kate's Campoven Kitchen, where you get a delicious meal and a history show on Wednesday and Saturday nights from April until early October. Dot and the Kangaroo (version 2) Ethel C. Pedley A 5-year-old girl named Dot is lost in the outback after chasing a hare into the wood and losing sight of her home. She is approached by a red kangaroo who gives her some berries to eat. Upon eating the berries, Dot is able to understand the language of all animals, and she tells the kangaroo her plight. The kangaroo, who has lost her own joey, decides to help little Dot despite her own fear of humans. The book is filled with criticism on negative human interference in the wild in 1884.
