Gene therapy - how can poorer countries benefit from the most expensive drugs in the world?

from Radio Davos

Gene therapy is one of the fastest growing areas of healthcare with over 2,000 therapies in development globally. The new techniques could challenge some of the world's most feared diseases, including HIV and cancer, But the enormous cost means poorer countries could miss out, and the fact that R&D is concentrated in richer countries means the therapies developed there might not always be suitable for use in other parts of the world. This episode of the Radio Davos podcast hears from a senior healthcare figure in Uganda on what needs to be done.   Speakers:   Cissy Kityo, Executive Director of the Joint Clinical Research Centre in Uganda Kevin Doxzen, Hoffmann Fellow, Precision Medicine and Emerging Biotechnologies, World Economic Forum Useful links: Joint Clinical Research Centre Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064558791099 CRISPRpedia Website: https://innovativegenomics.org/crisprpedia/ WEF white paper https://www.weforum.org/whitepapers/accelerating-global-access-to-gene-therapies-case-studies-from-low-and-middle-income-countries   Check out all our podcasts on wef.ch/podcasts: Meet the Leader  WEF Book Club Podcast Agenda Dialogues Join the World Economic Forum Podcast Club Episode transcript: https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2022/10/gene-therapies-hiv-cancer-uganda
