The opening 4 chapters of Matthew’s gospel set the scene for all that will follow. Before we get into the details of Jesus' ministry and teaching Matthew wants us to know who Jesus is. We are to encounter Jesus' words, miracles and compassion through the lens of his identity. He is the fully human, fully divine, Immanuel - God with us. He is the beloved Son of God who will both embody what it looks like to live in the kingdom, but also through his life, death and resurrection make a way for us to enter the kingdom. Jesus ministry opens with the call to repent for the kingdom of God is at hand, after generations of waiting for the promised seed of Abraham, the promised descendant of David, now finally in Jesus the kingdom has come - hope is born.
