Genesis 1-2
from The Safe Space · host Esther Parham
Welcome to The Safe Space! Where we last left off in the Bible, there was nothing but darkness over the formless and empty earth. Then God spoke—and everything changed. “Let there be light.” And there was light. God separated the light from the darkness, calling the light day and the darkness night. With each command, creation unfolded in breathtaking order. The waters were separated, the sky was formed, and the dry ground appeared. God called the dry ground land and the waters seas, and He saw that it was good. Then the earth burst forth with vegetation—plants producing seeds and trees bearing fruit. God placed lights in the sky to govern the day and night, marking seasons, days, and years. The greater light ruled the day, the lesser light ruled the night, and God also made the stars. The waters came alive with every kind of creature, and birds filled the sky. God blessed them and commanded them to multiply. Then came the creatures of the land—livestock, small animals, and wild animals, each according to its kind. And once again, God saw that it was good. But creation was not yet complete. God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us.” And so He created humanity in His own image—male and female. He blessed them, gave them authority over the earth, and entrusted them with the care of every living thing. God provided every seed-bearing plant and every fruit-bearing tree for food, while the animals were given green plants. He looked over everything He had made, and it was very good. The heavens and the earth were completed, along with everything in them. On the seventh day, God finished His work and rested from all He had done. He blessed the seventh day and declared it holy. Then the story draws closer to the beginning of humanity. Before there was rain, a mist rose from the earth and watered the ground. God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into him the breath of life. The man became a living person. God planted a garden in Eden and placed the man there. Trees grew throughout the garden—beautiful to see and good for food. In the middle stood the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river flowed from Eden, dividing into four branches and watering the land. God gave the man a purpose: to tend and watch over the garden. He gave him freedom to eat from every tree except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, warning that eating from it would bring death. Yet God saw something that was not good: the man was alone. So God brought the animals and birds before him, and the man gave each one its name. But none was a suitable companion for him. Then God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. He took one of the man’s ribs and formed a woman from it, bringing her to the man. At last, the man exclaimed that she was bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh. And so God established the first human relationship. The man and woman were naked, yet they felt no shame. The world was new. Humanity had been created in God’s image. The garden was prepared, the command had been given, and the stage was set for everything that would follow. Verse of the Day: Romans 8:26-27 And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. Question of the Day: What have you been wanting to tell God?
