Genesis 25-26

from The Safe Space · host Esther Parham

Welcome to The Safe Space! Where we last left off in the Bible, Isaac had married Rebekah, and after the long journey of Abraham’s faith, the promise of God was continuing into a new generation. But the story now takes an unexpected turn as Abraham’s life draws to a close and Isaac’s family begins to face struggles of its own. Abraham marries Keturah and has more children, but Isaac remains the heir of the covenant God made with Abraham. At the age of 175, Abraham dies and is buried by Isaac and Ishmael beside Sarah in the cave of Machpelah. Meanwhile, God’s promise continues through Isaac. Rebekah is unable to have children, so Isaac prays to the Lord for her. God answers, and she becomes pregnant with twins. But the struggle begins even before they are born. The babies jostle within her so fiercely that Rebekah asks why this is happening. The Lord tells her that two nations are in her womb, and that the older will serve the younger. When the twins are born, the first is red and covered with hair, so they name him Esau. His brother comes out grasping Esau’s heel, and he is named Jacob. The boys grow into very different men. Esau becomes a skilled hunter who loves the outdoors, while Jacob is quieter and remains among the tents. One day, Esau returns from the wilderness exhausted and desperately hungry. Jacob is cooking stew, and Esau begs for some. Jacob agrees—but only if Esau will give him his rights as the firstborn. Driven by his hunger, Esau accepts. He eats, drinks, gets up, and leaves, showing how lightly he has treated his birthright. A famine then strikes the land, just as one had during Abraham’s lifetime. Isaac travels toward Gerar, but God appears to him and tells him not to go down to Egypt. Instead, Isaac is commanded to remain in the land God will show him. God repeats the covenant promise given to Abraham: his descendants will become numerous, and through them all the nations of the earth will be blessed. But Isaac fears for his life and tells the people that Rebekah is his sister. Eventually, King Abimelech discovers the truth and warns his people not to harm either of them. Isaac becomes extremely wealthy, with flocks, herds, and many servants. His success causes the Philistines to become jealous, and they stop up the wells that Abraham’s servants had dug. Isaac begins reopening the wells, but disputes erupt over each one. Rather than continue fighting, Isaac keeps moving until he finds a place where there is room to settle. Finally, at Beersheba, the Lord appears to him and reassures him: “Do not be afraid, for I am with you.” Isaac builds an altar there and calls on the Lord’s name. The chapter closes with Esau making marriages that bring grief to Isaac and Rebekah. The family chosen to carry God's covenant is growing—but rivalry, difficult choices, and conflict are already shaping the generations to come. Verse of the Day: Deuteronomy 7:9 Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands. Question of the Day: Do you struggle to believe that God's promises are for you?
