Genesis 27-28
from The Safe Space · host Esther Parham
Welcome to The Safe Space! Where we last left off in the Bible, Isaac had settled in the land God had promised to his family, while tension continued to grow between his sons, Esau and Jacob. Now, the rivalry between the brothers reaches a turning point as Isaac prepares to give his blessing. Isaac is old and his eyesight has failed. Believing that death may be near, he calls Esau and asks him to hunt some wild game and prepare his favorite meal. Afterward, Isaac intends to give Esau his blessing before he dies. But Rebekah overhears the conversation. Remembering that God had said the older son would serve the younger, she devises a plan to secure the blessing for Jacob. While Esau is away hunting, Jacob prepares a meal for his father. Rebekah dresses him in Esau's clothes and covers his hands and neck with goatskins so he will feel hairy like his brother. Jacob enters his father's tent and claims to be Esau. Isaac is suspicious. The voice sounds like Jacob's, but the hands feel like Esau's. After questioning him, Isaac finally believes the deception. He eats the meal and asks Jacob to come near. Then Isaac gives him the blessing meant for Esau, declaring that God will bless him with abundance, nations will bow before him, and those who curse him will be cursed. Jacob leaves just as Esau returns. When Esau discovers what has happened, his grief turns to hatred. He pleads for a blessing of his own, but Isaac tells him that Jacob will remain the one who rules over his brother. Esau vows to kill Jacob after their father dies. Rebekah learns of Esau's plan and urges Jacob to flee to her brother Laban in Haran until Esau's anger subsides. But before Jacob leaves, Isaac blesses him again and sends him away to find a wife from among their relatives rather than from the Canaanite women. Jacob begins his journey alone. As night falls, Jacob stops and uses a stone for a pillow. While he sleeps, he dreams of a stairway reaching from earth to heaven, with angels moving up and down it. Above it stands the Lord, who identifies Himself as the God of Abraham and Isaac. God then repeats the covenant promise. The land where Jacob is sleeping will belong to him and his descendants. His family will become numerous, spreading in every direction, and through his descendants all the families of the earth will be blessed. Then comes a personal promise: God will be with Jacob, protect him wherever he goes, and bring him back to this land. “I will not leave you until I have finished giving you everything I have promised you.” Jacob awakens filled with awe. He realizes that the Lord is in this place and declares it “the house of God,” naming it Bethel. He sets up the stone as a memorial and makes a vow to follow the Lord. Jacob had gained the blessing through deception and was now fleeing for his life. Yet in the wilderness, God met him with a promise that would shape the future of an entire nation. His journey was only beginning. Verse of the Day: Psalm 9:10 Those who know the LORD trust him, because he will not leave those who come to him. Question of the Day: What experiences in your life seemed good, but turned out being less than God's best for you?
