Genesis 29-30
from The Safe Space · host Esther Parham
Welcome to The Safe Space! Where we last left off in the Bible, Jacob had left home after receiving Isaac’s blessing and fleeing from Esau. Along the way, God met him at Bethel and promised to be with him, protect him, and bring him back to the land He had given to his family. Now Jacob arrives in the land of his relatives, where his life takes an unexpected turn. Jacob comes to a well and meets Rachel, the daughter of his uncle Laban. He is immediately drawn to her, and when he meets Laban, he agrees to work seven years for Rachel’s hand in marriage. The years seem like only a few days because of his love for her. But when the wedding night comes, Laban deceives Jacob. Instead of Rachel, he gives him Leah, his older daughter. Jacob discovers the deception the next morning and confronts Laban. Laban explains that their custom requires the older daughter to marry first. Jacob agrees to complete Leah’s bridal week, then marries Rachel as well, promising to work another seven years. The rivalry between the sisters soon becomes painful. Leah is able to have children, while Rachel remains childless. Leah gives birth to Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, hoping each son will cause Jacob to love her. Rachel, desperate for children, gives her servant Bilhah to Jacob, and Bilhah bears Dan and Naphtali. Leah then gives her servant Zilpah to Jacob, and Zilpah bears Gad and Asher. The competition continues. Leah later has more children, Issachar and Zebulun, and a daughter named Dinah. Finally, God remembers Rachel. She becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son, Joseph, declaring that she hopes the Lord will give her another son. Throughout these years, Jacob’s household grows, but so does his desire to return home. After completing his years of service to Laban, Jacob asks to leave with his wives and children. Laban, however, realizes that he has prospered because of Jacob and persuades him to stay. Jacob agrees to continue working, this time receiving a portion of the flocks as his wages. Through careful breeding and God's blessing, Jacob's herds become stronger and more numerous. His wealth increases greatly—flocks, servants, camels, and donkeys. But Laban and his sons begin to resent Jacob's success. The relationship between them becomes increasingly strained. Jacob has now spent many years serving Laban, enduring deception much like the deception he once practiced against his own family. Yet through it all, his household has multiplied, his possessions have grown, and God's promise to be with him is unfolding. The time is drawing near for Jacob to leave the land of Laban and return to the land of his fathers. But what awaits him there—and how will he face Esau after all these years? Verse of the Day: Psalm 119:160; 162 The very essence of your words is truth; all your just regulations will stand forever. I rejoice in your word like one who discovers a great treasure. Question of the Day: What does it look like for you to stand on the truth of God's Word in this season of your life?
