Shechem takes Dinah and violates her, but afterward, he expresses love for her and desires to marry her. He asks his father, Hamor, to arrange the marriage with Dinah’s family. When Jacob hears about what happened to Dinah, he is distressed, but he waits for his sons to return from the fields before responding. Dinah’s brothers are furious when they learn of the assault. Hamor visits Jacob to negotiate a marriage, offering peace and intermarriage between their peoples, as well as trade and shared land. Shechem himself also pleads with Jacob and his sons, offering to pay any bride price they demand. The sons of Jacob deceitfully agree to the marriage on the condition that all the males in Shechem’s city be circumcised, making it seem like this is a step toward unity. Hamor and Shechem persuade the men of their city to agree, emphasizing the mutual benefits of intermarriage and shared resources. On the third day, while the men of the city are still in pain from the circumcision, Simeon and Levi, two of Dinah’s brothers, attack the city. They kill all the males, including Hamor and Shechem, rescue Dinah, and loot the city, taking women, children, livestock, and wealth. Jacob condemns their actions, fearing retaliation from the surrounding Canaanite and Perizzite tribes, which could jeopardize his family’s safety.
