Genesis 34–36

from The Safe Space · host Esther Parham

Welcome to The Safe Space! Where we last left off in the Bible, Jacob had finally returned to Canaan and reunited with his brother Esau. But peace within Jacob’s family is quickly shattered by a devastating act against his daughter Dinah. Dinah goes out to visit the young women of the area when Shechem, the son of a local ruler, seizes and violates her. Though Shechem then wants to marry Dinah, her brothers are furious. Hamor, Shechem’s father, approaches Jacob and proposes that their families live together and intermarry. But Jacob’s sons secretly plan revenge. They agree to the arrangement only if every man in Shechem is circumcised. The men accept—and while they are recovering, Simeon and Levi attack the city, killing every male. Jacob’s other sons then plunder the city and take the women and children captive. Jacob is deeply troubled, warning that their actions have placed the entire family in danger, but his sons insist that their sister could not be treated as though her violation meant nothing. Then God calls Jacob to return to Bethel, the place where God had first appeared to him during his flight from Esau. Jacob commands his household to put away their foreign gods, purify themselves, and prepare to worship the God who has remained with them wherever they have gone. At Bethel, Jacob builds an altar and God renews His covenant promises, confirming that Jacob will be called Israel and that his descendants will become a great nation and possess the land promised to their family. But Jacob’s journey is soon marked by sorrow. Rachel dies while giving birth to Benjamin, naming him Ben-oni, “son of my sorrow,” before Jacob gives him the name Benjamin. Later, Reuben commits a serious offense involving Bilhah, and Jacob learns of it. The twelve sons of Jacob are then named, establishing the family that will become the twelve tribes of Israel. At last, Jacob returns to his father Isaac at Hebron. Isaac dies at the age of 180, and both Jacob and Esau come together to bury their father. The final portion turns to Esau, also known as Edom, tracing his wives, sons, descendants, clan leaders, and the kings who rule over Edom. His family grows into a nation of its own, fulfilling the continuing story of the descendants of Abraham’s family. From betrayal and revenge to renewed promises, heartbreaking loss, and the unfolding generations of Esau and Jacob, Genesis 34–36 carries the story forward toward a new chapter—one that will soon place the sons of Jacob at the center of the story. Verse of the Day: 1 Peter 5:7 Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you. Action of the Day: Are you struggling with anxiety?
