Genesis 37-39
from The Safe Space · host Esther Parham
Welcome to The Safe Space! Where we last left off in the Bible, Jacob’s family had grown into a large household, and the generations of Esau and Jacob had been established. Now the story turns toward Jacob’s beloved son Joseph—and a chain of events that will take him far from home and into circumstances he could never have imagined. Joseph, seventeen years old, tends his father’s flocks alongside his brothers. Jacob loves Joseph more than his other sons and gives him a beautiful robe that sets him apart. His brothers become consumed with jealousy, especially when Joseph begins sharing dreams that seem to suggest they will one day bow before him. Their resentment grows into hatred. One day, Jacob sends Joseph to check on his brothers and the flocks. When they see him approaching, they plot to kill him. Reuben intervenes, persuading them to throw Joseph into a pit instead, intending to rescue him later. But before Reuben can return, the brothers sell Joseph to passing traders headed for Egypt. They take Joseph’s robe, dip it in goat’s blood, and bring it to Jacob. Believing that a wild animal has killed his son, Jacob tears his clothes and mourns deeply. In Egypt, Joseph is sold to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh. Yet even in slavery, the Lord is with Joseph, and everything he does prospers. Potiphar recognizes Joseph’s ability and places him in charge of his entire household. But Joseph’s circumstances change again when Potiphar’s wife repeatedly tries to seduce him. Joseph refuses, determined not to betray his master or sin against God. One day, she catches Joseph by his cloak and demands that he lie with her. Joseph escapes, leaving his cloak behind. When Potiphar’s wife accuses him of trying to assault her, Potiphar becomes furious and sends Joseph to prison. Yet even there, Joseph is not abandoned. The Lord remains with him, showing him faithful love and giving him favor with the prison warden. Joseph is entrusted with responsibility over the other prisoners, and whatever he does, the Lord makes him prosper. From a treasured son to a slave, from a trusted servant to a prisoner, Joseph’s life seems to be moving farther and farther from the dreams he once received. But through every betrayal, injustice, and sudden turn of events, one truth remains: God is with Joseph. And though Joseph cannot yet see where this path will lead, his journey in Egypt is only beginning. Verse of the Day: 1 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Question of the Day: What do you think will happen if you let others in?
