Genesis 43-45
from The Safe Space · host Esther Parham
Welcome to The Safe Space! Where we last left off in the Bible, Joseph’s brothers had returned to Egypt for food, but this time they brought Benjamin, their youngest brother. Joseph recognized him immediately, though they did not recognize Joseph. As the famine continued to grip the land, the brothers found themselves once again standing before the powerful ruler of Egypt, unaware that they were face-to-face with the brother they had sold into slavery years before. Joseph welcomed them into his home and prepared a feast. The brothers were frightened, believing they were being accused of the money mysteriously returned to their sacks on their previous journey. Instead, they were reassured, Simeon was brought out to them, and they were treated with kindness. Joseph struggled to contain his emotions when he saw Benjamin, but he kept his identity hidden. At the meal, the brothers were amazed to find themselves seated in their exact birth order, while Benjamin received a portion far greater than the others. But the tension rises again when Joseph secretly instructs his palace manager to place his silver cup in Benjamin’s sack. After the brothers leave Egypt, they are stopped and accused of stealing it. The cup is discovered in Benjamin’s possession, and the brothers tear their clothes in grief before returning to Joseph. Judah then steps forward with a heartfelt plea. He explains their father’s deep attachment to Benjamin and the devastating grief that would overtake Jacob if Benjamin failed to return. Judah reminds Joseph that he personally guaranteed the young man’s safety and offers himself as a slave in Benjamin’s place. He cannot bear to return home and watch his father suffer another devastating loss. Joseph can no longer hold back his emotions. He orders everyone else from the room, and then, through tears, reveals the truth: he is Joseph. His brothers are stunned and terrified. Yet instead of seeking revenge, Joseph tells them not to be angry with themselves. What they intended for harm, God had used to preserve lives. Joseph explains that the famine will continue for years, but God sent him ahead to prepare a place of safety for his family. Joseph urges his brothers to hurry back to Canaan and bring their father, their families, and everything they have to Egypt. Pharaoh welcomes the news and offers Jacob and his entire household the best land in Egypt. Joseph sends wagons, provisions, clothing, and gifts with his brothers for their journey home. When they finally reach Jacob, they deliver the astonishing news: Joseph is alive—and he is ruler over all Egypt! At first, Jacob cannot believe it. But when he sees the wagons Joseph sent, his spirit revives. After years of mourning the son he believed was lost forever, Jacob declares that he must go and see Joseph before he dies. Verse of the Day: Psalm 71:20-21 Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up. You will increase my honor and comfort me once more. Question of the Day: In what areas do you need God's comfort today?
