Are you sure? I'm a hundred percent sure. Incredible. All right, guys.
Well, this is John here for the Lickard Leader podcast and that silky smooth voice you hear on the other side of the microphone. This is Dr. Seichel Shippaster from Mariner's Chabukah Canyon. Ladies and gentlemen, it's Chris Kallangelo.
What's up, Chris? Perfectly said, really grateful for your. Kallangelo gets some people sometimes. It does, but you just told me what?
Did I say better than? Better than most. Better than most. Yeah.
I know you're a longtime listener first time, first time guest on here, but thanks for joining us, man. And you've been now in your role of discipleship pastor at Mariner's Chabukah Canyon for how long? Four months. And how long have we had a Mariner's Chabukah Canyon?
Five months. Isn't that incredible? Right from the get go. Yeah.
Yeah. So man, just tell leaders who are listening now, go hop leaders and listening from your congregation but across all congregations, God's doing something pretty special down there. What do you see? I want to encourage you.
Yeah. It's, it's, it's, I would honestly say humbling to be in a situation where you can feel the hunger. You can feel people returning. I mean, how many years past COVID are we in people are still battling this lossness?
Like I stopped going to church. My foundations were shaken and I need something. So we're in a unique situation where we're experiencing growth quickly. We're experiencing people who are hungry for community, hungry to be part of something.
And so it actually really has been an incredible blessing. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, also we're so grateful you're part of the team and helps to work out is doing down there right now.
It's an exciting time. And you got how many root groups in the session right now? Six root of the book going on right now. That's fantastic.
Already life groups down there. Yeah. Yeah. Got some great things in it.
Six Chris has been reminding me multiple times this week. What week this is? I don't know if you guys filled this out there, but hopefully you were able to have Memorial Day off like we did here, but messed up my week. I was like, what is going on?
What day is it? So week six, we are in our six week of the book of Genesis. And this is a week where most congregations you have a, your lead pastor teaching at your location, but you can't even because Doug field is teaching Irvine. I think you're going to have the Doug's message down there.
Right. So whether you've got a live teacher or use a Doug at your congregation, the questions that we're going to navigate through are going to be relevant. And man, what a passage to pick through. Come on, man.
Yeah. So many, like hinge passages, passages that set the trajectory for the rest of not just scripture, but God's story of redemption. And this is a really, really significant one. All right.
So we're going to, this is the mixture of Chris's and Harris, he, Harry, to contest. Find out a lot. Amazing. All right.
Why don't we start with our lean in and we have not, you know, rehearsed these together. So this is, I'm here in responses live right here. All right. So have you ever been in a situation where things seem hopeless, but then something surprising happened and turned it around.
What comes to your mind, Chris? I would you? Yeah. This is a, this is a significant question because I think a lot of us in our lives have examples of this and one jumps right out to me.
I had a kind of a salvation story that man, it's just, it's just so big in my mind. But one of the things about this question that, that interesting is this idea of Victoria Lizing when you look back on something that you almost have a hard time remembering the hopelessness. That's the key word there. The feeling of hopelessness because everything worked out in the end.
You think about Joe, you think about so many Bible stories. It's like, yes, now we see the beauty in it. And that was part of my kind of come to Jesus moment where I got caught shoplifting and it was almost pitical. It was just still, it was just still man.
Is it embarrassing? Right. At this point, I, a little bit of a repentance moment. Like we were high-end.
We were going to snowboarding stores and we were going to, it had moved past gum at the, you say we had a little day. There was an actual gang, the three of us. We went around and that's just this one time my friend who was supposed to be the lookout was supposed to be the guy keeping, keeping them distracted, really liked a snowboard. He put it on layaway using his real address and his real phone number and everything.
And so when they realized what had taken place, we were miles away, but they called his mom and just said you better send those boys back right now. Yeah. owner and this almost feels like I'm making it up like a parable but the store owner was like you Know what I'm not gonna press charges when you have to meet with the local like the local Christians in your town really because You boys have your whole lives ahead of you So and I thought I honestly thought I'd rather go to jail Well like just press the charges because this will ruin my whole reputation Everyone's gonna find out about this the little local church is not gonna It's not gonna go up and I didn't know at the time how unbelievably significant me thinking the worst thing that's ever happened Actually changed my life forever and that one meeting with that youth leader turned into a best friendship by the end of it Incredible, but I do remember pretty clearly the hopelessness of that moment My reputation is ruined and everybody's gonna know all this terrible stuff about me Yeah, that hopelessness there and I wonder how many people in life groups live are going to be able to look back on the faithfulness of God Yeah, like Abraham is looking at Isaac. He's the fulfillment of a miracle but also being a hopeless situation right because that's a very different thing Yeah, really good man.
That's fantastic man. I want to hear more about this snowboarding game of a gang of Thefs me. Yeah, that's fantastic. My mind's a little less a significant but the first thing came in my youngest daughter Lucy the mind soccer for three years with her best friends So much fun and she's she's having the time of her life You know she's kind of new a lot of other kids a little bit further along in her It's a it's a she had to squirt a goal yet And so everybody on the team has scored a goal And so we're holding out hope and everything else and it's the last game of the season and she's in the right place at the right time You know somebody crosses the ball into the box and defenders trying to clear it at the same time She swings her leg and reflects right off of her leg and it was an incredible like looping top bins keep her never had a chance Coaches are crying we're all crying we're running all over the place because she's just the sweetest kid ever She really she really is they were holding her like a Disney movie So that's that's mine.
That's why I got way better. I've only watched that video about 500 times All right, yeah, put it up it. Oh, yeah, my wife was happy to recording it right at that So if you see me on the patio or the outdoor worship center I've got it if you really want to see you know my teen year old score first soccer I'm sure everybody's fascinated by that. I'd love to show you okay great So I'm gonna jump into the passage we're gonna read from Genesis 27 through 14 in a couple of observation questions to help guide the conversation What does the provision of the sacrifice in this passage for foreshadow for us as Christians?
If you don't know the answer in church the answer is Jeeza. Yeah, yeah, so that's good. We'll talk to them more about that and then a re-reverse a or pay attention to verse 8 What do Abraham's words here tell us about Abraham and what do you think about God? Alright, so 27 to 14.
I'm gonna go ahead and actually read it and then Chris you'll help make some observations 22 7 through 14 then Isaac spoke to his father Abraham and said my father and he replied here I am my son so before this right God has called Abraham to you're gonna go up to go up to the mountain You're gonna make a sacrifice tells him to bring the necessary components for the sacrifice But not the animal you so where we're going out where you going with your God? So bring your son and then Isaac spoke to his father here. I am I'm here I am my son Isaac said the fire in the wood are here But where is the lamb for the burnt offering Abraham answer God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering my son Then the two of them walked on together So they're walking up. Yeah, the mountain and Isaac is getting curious because I told you go do this but We're missing the most important opponent here What's gonna happen when they arrived at the place that God had told him about Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood He bound his son Isaac and placed him on the altar on top of the wood Then Abraham reached out and took a knife to slaughter his son But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven said Abraham Abraham and he replied here I am then he said do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him for now I know that you fear God and since you have not withheld your only son from me Abraham looked up and saw I ram caught in a thicket by its horns So Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a bird offering in place of his son and Abraham named that place the Lord will provide So today to said it will be provided on the Lord's mountain the word of the Lord Chris what in the world This is have to do with God's redemptive plan of salvation made known through Jesus is there any parallels any lardings for us?
I know you've got multiple seminary degree, but what can we see here? I mean it sometimes feels like you get to the New Testament you get to Jesus and you think how are there people running around not getting this How are there people not reading these parts of Genesis or the Passover and not seeing? Just in bold type letters that Jesus is not plan B. It wasn't all well things didn't go to God's plan now Let's send Jesus.
Yeah, it was day one, you know the snake biting the heel. Yes. Oh, it's just beautiful Yeah, so like that's sovereignty of God totally. Yeah, it gives you a deep appreciation for the continuity of scripture that although it's 66 books They're not independent of each other that there's a story art There's a theme woven through God's sovereignty all the way throughout revealing his redemptive plan made most visibly known through Jesus Who was the son who sacrificed all who was the son that was our provision?
I mean, it's beautiful I mean even on the Mount Moriah right where scholars sometimes dispute is that Mount Galgatha is that actual mountain is that? Well, we do know for sure. It's definitely within the region region I could even on the same mountain ridge right if not the same exact spot Yeah, not only of Galgatha, but the temple mount with a temple was built where temple sacrifices were made for generation after generation Yeah, you know and it's in this spot that we see God where it says on this mountain God will provide that we see God also he does provide for the sacrifice of Jesus And so there's a real beauty in it and reading scripture through this lens of we know where the story is going Yeah, you read it from that perspective, right? You're reading not your you know your misinformed cultural expectations or your Preferences and description what you're reading into scripture and it's okay to read in the scripture as long as you're reading Jesus In the scripture right and you're reading Jesus in the scripture through this Genesis through all the scripture I mean, it's like it kind of goes from like black to black and white to this really vibrant Yeah, and it's it's a beautiful beautiful thing I love and I think if you have those Bible scholars in your group that want to get into it You could probably even send it around as a question like where else do we see in scripture correctly?
Clearly that's Jesus. Yeah, that's God leading those breadcrumbs for us. Yeah to say I've got all of this written Yeah, I'm gonna be seen every hand to you right is there's a radical trust is a radical trust again I mean God has already shown himself to be faithful The covenant has already been promised and it's not as though and God is like we're gonna test you one more time It's got really confirming his covenant again not based off of like Abraham's just solely his faith is apart apart of it Yeah, but ultimately in the God who was faithful in his and what he provides through it So so good so much so much here so you could talk quite a bit about about that. Yeah verse eight says what do Abraham words tell us about?
What do you think about God says? God himself will provide the land for the burn offering and then the two of them walk down together So we're already talking about yeah about that look at and this is and this is if you're still if week five is fresh in your memory This is the child Isaac is walking alongside his dad. Yeah, but just one week ago. We were talking about how can you provide a son?
Look how old I am That's for you know That's crazy and and his wife is laughing about it and now we're jumping right to a story where that son the miracle son of the promise is asking him That how's God gonna provide yeah in this situation? Yeah, it's just it's wonderful that he does get to the point where he says You know God will provide right the lamb. Yeah trust me. I've seen it before yeah You know yeah, although you know it's a matter of chapters between the stories I mean years that have passed right you know Isaac's it's like a toddler that I look up the mountain We think he's anywhere between I mean I've seen what have you seen I've seen like probably 12 or 13 12 13 all the way up to Like the way up to 30.
Yeah, I've seen I've seen that so this isn't you know Someone who doesn't know that this is years and years of having received the promise and being grateful for it It's like really now. This is what you're calling me to do unbelievable Right, let's go into look out section and a lot of your friends and neighbors probably don't believe or have faith in God What are the most common reasons why if you've heard some and the next question what do people most often put their faith in if not the Christian God or any Other kind of God so when I were talking about faith and how faith is a foundation how faith brings us hope And so where the other places where people find and put their faith in outside outside of God Yeah, yeah, I think I think there's an old country song. Oh boy. I forget.
I forget this about you like country I well, I'm from a country music play. Yeah. Yeah, where's that again? I'm from the middle of nowhere in Pennsylvania.
Yeah, even though it's the north it might as well be the full blown south is it's country Amish country to it's outside of Amish country, okay So there are farms and there are people and they are listening to country music a lot of song that says Jesus take the wheel And it's wildly dangerous terrible advice, but it does get to that like does that mean I have to take my hands off? Yeah, does that mean I get to have to remove my ability to control every little thing in order for this to go God's way in order for for the foundation of my life to sort of in this meaningful way. Yeah, that's hard. Yeah, that's a hurdle Yeah, I mean trusting the promise of he is good and he can't be trusted me all the way back to the garden in the fall That's what it was primarily about about trusting a God's goodness and his promise and actually I don't know if he has my best interest in heart So let me take the will let me drive it to where I think it should go what I want And we all do that whether Jesus follower or not.
We all want to control the outcomes of our lives Yeah, and there's a sense of like yeah Responsibility and wise choices and all of that all of that for sure and you don't want to be a little bit of the way that The way they live your life, but ultimately right it's trusting. Yeah, and the God is faithful in his promise I think to a lot of people there there needs to be a moment there needs to be something that goes sideways enough in their life where and we see this with counseling a lot of times It's like no, I'm never gonna go to counseling because that would be an admission that I don't have it all figured out I can't let people know that and I think for a lot of our neighbors and people in our communities that are Struggling with jumping into faith. It's it's no I can figure this out. I can get out of this I can I don't need to to go there totally, you know, and God has a plan.
That's right I'm really good. I'm just gonna look in sections here It says can you share about time in life when it was difficult to trust God what made it difficult for you? We're sure about a time when God showed up in a way that renewed a refresher faith in him and his love love for you So there's loads of stories within groups that people can share share about that But again, this is calling to remembrance of God who's faithful a moment where it seemed hopeless like Abraham May have felt here on the top of Mount Moriah with the Sun Isaac that God promised him and gave and gave him We're God God came through him and there's so many stories that are within groups there And so we share those stories so that we can remember but we also share those stories so that we can be empowered to live in through difficult situations Relations now. Yeah, yeah, no, I think that's really well said as a group of people trusting and doing life Trusting each other and doing life together.
The sensitive version of this question is is anyone in one? Is anyone going through something that they're battling now? Yeah, that is making them feel hopeless. That's difficult Yeah, yeah, that's right And then this weekend is I'm inviting people to surf right to serve out of the gifts that God has given them And so I know you're gonna hold that moment at your people Canyon I'll hold it here in the outdoor worship center Just just talk about the importance of that and we're maybe you see the connection from what we're talking about this week in the passage to This invitation for people to serve.
Yeah, I think that I think that the real The real twist that we need to that we need to move away from is this idea that we need something that God needs something from us When actually these are these are things that are laid out for us. They're not you know God taking or the church meeting They're actually so healthy rhythms of life where we step into what God has gifted us in and stepped out into our communities to serve for this grand purpose for The health of our soul really. Yeah, that's right. That's really that's really well sent.
It's not about Yeah, trying to get something out of him It's it's not necessarily even that God needs us but he invites us and it destroys to the promise that he will that he will provide and that us Stepping in to the story that he's writing. It's good for us. It's good for our formation It's good for you know as we're following Jesus and making him known through our lives And so there's gonna be a mutation this weekend for you to for you to serve out of your gifts and to make an impact and you may think I don't have the time right or can I trust that he's really good in this and what difference is it really make Man, we can trust him and that but as we follow him as we serve him as we make him known through our lives that there's an impact on us There's an impact on the kingdom and there's an impact on others. So we'll be invited to that this week out Beautiful.
