She used to destroy everything she touched. Recovery taught her to become a contributor instead of a disruptor. Genevieve H. grew up in what she describes as a battlefield. Abuse, addiction, shame, and confusion shaped her childhood while two very different worlds competed for her attention: active addiction at home and church every Sunday with her grandparents. By twelve years old, she found relief in alcohol. What followed was years of chaos, toxic relationships, self-destruction, and a growing belief that she could not stop drinking even when she wanted to. She burned relationships to the ground, lost custody of her children, and after suffering an alcoholic seizure at an AA meeting on New Year’s Eve, doctors warned her she might die if she kept drinking. Still, she drank again. In this powerful episode of The Cup of Joe Show, Genevieve shares how recovery slowly transformed her from someone trapped in “victimese” into a woman living with honesty, service, and purpose.
