Count Siegfried's wife, Genevieve, is falsely accused of disloyalty by the jealous Knight Golo while Siegfried is at war. Golo imprisons her and orders her execution, but the sympathetic executioners spare her life. Genevieve raises her son, Schmerzenreich, in a forest cave, sustained by a deer's milk. Years later, Siegfried discovers Golo's deceit, forgives him, and goes hunting, where he encounters Genevieve and their son.
