Genocide Denial
from Never Again...Again Hosted by Anjali Thakore and Livia Hughson
In the third episode of our podcast, we delve into issues of genocide denial and its manifestation across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In our discussion, we identify different forms of genocide denial and provide a brief background on the infamous court case between Holocaust denier David Irving and American historian Deborah Lipstadt. We then bring in Professor Wendy Lower of Claremont McKenna College to provide her expertise on Holocaust denial and her experiences of engaging with “pseudo-historians.” To conclude, we discuss the implications of criminalising genocide denial on free speech and the role that mass media plays in enabling the fabrication of information and cultivating an environment in which genocide denial can flourish.
