George Chatzipirpirdis

from Meeting Podcast Hosted by Parkinson's Body and Mind

George Chatzipirpiridis is a biomedical engineer, serving as the co-founder and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Magnes AG, a Swiss startup specializing in wearable sensor technology for health applications. Following his master's studies in Robotics and Mechatronics, he continued at ETH Zurich's Multi-Scale Robotics Lab, completing his Ph.D. in Microrobotics. His doctoral research centered on magnetic technologies for small-scale robotics, contributing significantly to the development of micro- and nanorobotic systems. In 2017, leveraging his expertise in microrobotics, he co-founded Magnes AG, a technology spin-off from ETH Zurich. The company has developed smart shoes that analyze human movements using AI algorithms to provide biofeedback through vibrations. These technologies are applied in areas such as the management of neurological disorders, freezing of gait, fall prevention, and the development of digital biomarkers for new drugs. TOPIC: The NUSHUX Smart shoe analyzes walk patterns of patients with neurological disorders addressing issues such as freezing of gait and fall prevention, and gives haptic feedback to patients. Using smart sensors embedded in sneaker-like shoes data is collected while the patient is walking or doing daily activities. NUSHU’s AI powered gait analysis provides 40+ gait parameters, ranging from spatio-temporal parameters to balance and symmetry metrics. NUSHU can provide vibrotactile biofeedback to interact with the wearer. The state-of-the-art algorithms detect gait events in real-time to warn or guide patients. It allows healthcare professionals to monitor patients inside and outside the clinic. NUSHU can be used for performing standard gait assessments as well as for remote monitoring of patients.
