George Van Tassel and Giant Rock: The 1950s Contactee Movement That Changed UFO History | Chad Meek

Before the modern disclosure movement, before streaming documentaries and government hearings, there was a nine-story boulder in the Mojave Desert where the future of the UFO conversation was being written. Giant Rock, forty-two miles outside Palm Springs, became the gathering place for thousands of UFO experiencers every year during the 1950s, 60s and 70s, and the man at the center of it all was George Van Tassel. Van Tassel was the defining UFO contactee of his era. From 1954 until his passing in 1978, he hosted the Giant Rock Spacecraft Conventions, drawing crowds of five to twelve thousand people annually. Military pilots, airline captains, celebrities and ordinary experiencers all made the pilgrimage to a place where it was finally safe to talk about what they had seen. Van Tassel also built the Integratron, a dome-shaped structure he said was designed for time travel and rejuvenation, and he claimed alien visitors gave him the formula behind it. In this episode, his nephew Chad Meek shares what it was like to grow up inside that world. Chad lived at Giant Rock as a child and remembers the pilots gathered around his uncle's restaurant, the Howard Hughes connection, and the climate of fear that forced military men to come to Van Tassel in secret. He explains how his uncle counseled experiencers who had nowhere else to turn, decades before the term disclosure entered the mainstream vocabulary.
