Der Philosoph und Soziologe gehörte zur späten Frankfurter Schule gemeinsam mit Jürgen Habermas. Er vertrat kritische Thesen gegenüber der permanenten Rationalisierung von Arbeit, dem Diktum neoliberaler Profitmaximierung und dem börsengetriebenen Finanzkapitalismus.
