Get Thee to a Nunnery (And Also to Therapy) — Hamlet Act 3, Scene 1

from Whine with Some Cheese · host Michael Seong

Today we were forced to read actual text in a hostile font under lighting that is actively trying to age us. And for what? Hamlet, Act 3 Scene 1, aka the scene where everyone spies on everyone, Hamlet spirals, and Ophelia pays the price.Claudius and Polonius recruit Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to report on Hamlet’s “lunacy” (snitch behavior), then stage the most invasive setup imaginable: Ophelia is instructed to wander around reading like she’s an aesthetic prop, while the King and Polonius hide behind an arras to eavesdrop. If Denmark had privacy laws, this entire court would be in prison.Hamlet enters with the famous “To be, or not to be” soliloquy, thirty lines of existential overthinking, and then Ophelia approaches to return his gifts. Hamlet responds by interrogating her (“honest” and “fair”), melting down about women and makeup, and repeatedly telling her to “get thee to a nunnery.” Ophelia is devastated, delivers her own heartbreak monologue, and then Claudius emerges from hiding deciding this isn’t love-madness, it’s danger. Solution: ship Hamlet to England and keep him “unwatch’d” no longer. We whine about:Surveillance culture, arranged “chance” meetings, and court-level HR violationsHamlet’s iconic soliloquy vs. the obvious alternative: therapyOphelia being used as bait and then verbally demolished for existingMisogyny, repetition-as-violence, and “nunnery” as a breakup strategyClaudius pivoting from “concerned stepdad” to “deport him immediately”Cut the cheese, fix the lighting, and remember: if someone is hiding behind furniture to monitor your relationship, block them on every platform, including carrier pigeon.
